First-Time Scuba Diving in Isla Mujeres: What Really Happens

It begins before the boat
A responsible beginner program starts with paperwork, medical screening, equipment orientation and a briefing. The instructor explains breathing, pressure equalization, communication and the skills required before entering open water.
Shallow-water preparation
Participants practice breathing through a regulator, clearing water from a mask, recovering the regulator and responding to the instructor. Comfort matters more than speed. A guest who cannot complete required skills should not be pressured into the reef portion.
The first descent
Descending slowly gives the ears time to equalize. Tell the instructor immediately about discomfort; do not force the descent. The instructor controls depth, route and group position according to the program and conditions.
Where beginners may dive
Shallow areas around Manchones and selected MUSA sites can be appropriate for introductory diving. The actual site is chosen for safety, weather, water conditions, park access and group ability—not only for the photograph a guest wants.
What the program is not
Try Scuba does not make someone a certified diver. It does not authorize independent diving afterward. Participants who want to continue should enroll in a recognized Open Water course and complete its academic, confined-water and open-water requirements.
Who needs extra discussion
Minimum age, swimming ability and medical requirements apply. Pregnancy and some respiratory, cardiac, neurological or recent surgical conditions may prevent participation. Complete medical information honestly and seek physician clearance when required.
