Wildlife comes first

Whale sharks are wild, free-roaming animals. They move with food, currents and changing ocean conditions. We plan carefully and search with experienced local crews, but no responsible operator can promise a sighting or a specific number of water entries.

The tour is worthwhile because the encounter is real, not staged. That also means the animals, authorities, weather and sea decide what is possible on the day.

Official season and the most likely period

The authorized season has traditionally run from mid-May through mid-September, with exact dates established by Mexican authorities. Sightings are often more consistent in July and August, but migration never follows a guaranteed calendar.

Early- and late-season trips can be excellent or quiet. Always confirm the current authorized season before arranging flights or a non-refundable itinerary around the activity. Use the official CONANP reserve information as the authoritative conservation reference.

The offshore search

The authorized activity zone covers a large offshore area north of Isla Mujeres toward Isla Contoy and Holbox. Travel to the general area can take approximately one to two hours, and the search itself may be short or extended. Wind, waves and the animals' location change the duration and comfort of the day.

Guests who imagine a short coastal snorkeling stop are likely to be surprised. Prepare for a full marine excursion with sun, spray, boat movement and variable return time.

Weather, port authority and cancellations

Harbor authorities may restrict or close navigation. The captain and operator also evaluate wind, waves, forecast development, visibility and guest safety. A tour may be delayed, rescheduled or canceled even when the weather looks pleasant from shore.

If we cancel because conditions are unsafe, guests may choose a full refund or reschedule, subject to availability. Guest cancellations made more than seven days before the tour receive a full refund; cancellations six days or less before the tour receive 50%; cancellations within two days and no-shows are non-refundable.

Participation restrictions

This open-ocean activity is not suitable during pregnancy or for guests with medical or mobility conditions that make offshore snorkeling unsafe. Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs cannot participate. Minors ages 10 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Children ages 6 to 10 require a signed parental waiver, and children under 6 are not permitted.

Life vests are mandatory. If a medical question applies to you, request professional medical advice before booking and disclose the relevant information to the operator.

Rules around the animals

• Follow the guide and captain at all times.
• Only two swimmers enter with a guide when instructed.
• Enter calmly; do not jump, splash, chase or block an animal.
• Do not touch, dive beneath or ride beside a whale shark.
• Maintain the distance directed by the guide, especially from the head and tail.
• Do not use sunscreen, oils or lotions in the water; use physical sun protection.
• No drones, flash photography, selfie sticks or underwater scooters.
• No alcohol or intoxicants before or during the activity.

Authorities may limit swimming because of capacity, animal behavior or conditions. Observation from the boat may replace a water entry.

What to confirm before paying

Confirm the departure point, meeting time, estimated return window, included transportation, food and drinks, equipment, marine fees, cancellation terms and the contact method for weather updates. Tell us about children, medical concerns, swimming ability and serious motion-sickness history before reserving.
