A Complete Diver-Development Path

Not every diver follows the same route. The correct progression depends on experience, interests, available time, and the environments the diver eventually wants to explore.

A common progression may look like this:

Try Scuba → Open Water → Advanced Open Water → Rescue Diver → Nitrox → Divemaster or Specialty Development → Sidemount → Adventure Diving → Cavern → Cave or Technical Training

The sequence is not automatic. Some students need more open-water experience before an advanced course, while others may focus on professional, wreck, sidemount, cavern, cave, or technical development.

Beginner Training

SDI Open Water Scuba Diver

Your first complete scuba certification. The course covers diving theory, equipment, confined-water skills, open-water procedures, buoyancy, communication, problem prevention, and the foundations needed to dive within recreational limits.

SDI Open Water Referral

Continuing Education

SDI Advanced Open Water Diver

Advanced training expands experience through planned dives that develop navigation, depth awareness, buoyancy, environmental adaptation, and decision-making. It is not simply permission to go deeper.

SDI Rescue Diver

SDI Nitrox / EANx

Nitrox may support certain repetitive and longer no-decompression profiles, but it does not make every dive longer and it does not replace proper depth, gas, and exposure planning.

SDI Divemaster Certification

Divemaster is professional-level training for experienced divers who want to supervise certified divers, assist with operations, improve demonstration-quality skills, develop leadership, and understand how a dive business functions in practice.

The program includes more than completing academic requirements. Candidates must demonstrate judgment, consistency, environmental awareness, physical capability, professional conduct, and the ability to manage real divers in changing conditions.

Sidemount Training

SDI / TDI Sidemount

Sidemount places cylinders along the diver’s sides rather than on the back. Correct training focuses on equipment configuration, balance, trim, propulsion, gas switching, cylinder handling, gas sharing, problem management, and the reasons for choosing the configuration.

Sidemount may be used for recreational, technical, wreck, cavern, or cave objectives, but the certification and training plan must match the environment the diver intends to enter.

Technical, Cavern, and Cave Development

TDI and advanced training may be organized for divers seeking development beyond standard recreational limits. These programs are scheduled individually because prerequisites, equipment, gases, duration, instructor requirements, and environmental needs vary substantially.

Every student must meet the knowledge, skill, judgment, and performance requirements established for the course. Additional practice may be required, and an instructor may pause, modify, or end a program when safety, preparation, equipment, conditions, or performance do not support continuation.

This is particularly important in professional, sidemount, technical, cavern, and cave training, where weak fundamentals become larger problems as the environment and task loading increase.

• Can I combine more than one course?

• Is Nitrox worth taking?
