Snorkeling is one of the most direct ways to experience the shallow Caribbean reef without scuba equipment or certification. With a mask, snorkel, fins, life vest, and professional guidance, you can observe coral formations, tropical fish, and the underwater landscape while remaining at the surface.

This tour takes place in exactly the same general reef area used for our Reef Diving and Try Scuba experiences. The destination is not a separate snorkeling-only location: snorkelers, beginner divers, and certified divers visit the same nearby reef system and the same pool of possible sites.

What changes is the way the area is experienced. Snorkelers observe it from the surface without tanks; Try Scuba participants receive training before descending underwater; and certified divers explore below the surface using scuba equipment.

The Same Reef Area and the Same Sites

The snorkeling tour operates in the same shallow section of the National Marine Park used for Reef Diving and Try Scuba. Possible sites include Manchones Reef, Manchones 1, Manchones 2, Jardines, La Cruz de la Bahía, MUSA, and other nearby sites within the same general area.

These locations are close to one another and form part of the same operating zone. They share a similar shallow profile and general marine environment. One site is not presented as easier, clearer, more advanced, or inherently better than another.

The specific site or sites are selected according to the daily operating plan, weather, waves, current, visibility, access, park instructions, and the guide and captain’s assessment. A particular reef, sculpture installation, or sequence of sites is not guaranteed.

Manchones, MUSA, and Nearby Reef Sites

Manchones is the best-known name associated with this shallow reef area. The zone includes natural coral formations, sandy sections, reef structures, and installations from the MUSA Underwater Museum.

MUSA sculptures were placed underwater to support marine habitat development, encourage coral growth, and reduce pressure on natural reef formations. From the surface, what can be seen depends on water clarity, sunlight, sea movement, the specific installation, and the site assigned that day.

The page title and tour description mention Manchones and MUSA because they are recognizable reference points, not because both are guaranteed on every departure.

What You May See

Marine life in the area may include angelfish, parrotfish, barracudas, stingrays, lobsters, groupers, schools of tropical fish, and occasional sea turtles. Coral formations and submerged sculptures may also be visible depending on the assigned site and conditions.

This is a natural marine environment. Wildlife, visibility, water clarity, and individual sightings vary from day to day, and no particular animal, sculpture area, or underwater condition can be guaranteed.

Snorkeling, Try Scuba, or Reef Diving?

All three experiences use the same general reef area and the same nearby sites. The correct option depends on how you want to experience the water and whether you hold a scuba certification.

  • Snorkeling: observe the reef from the surface using mask, snorkel, fins, and life vest. No scuba certification is required.
  • Try Scuba: descend underwater after a briefing and shallow-water training. No scuba certification is required, but the activity includes scuba equipment, direct supervision, and two guided dives.
  • Reef Diving: two guided boat dives for certified divers using full scuba equipment.

Guests who are uncertain which option is appropriate should provide their swimming comfort, previous experience, certification status, ages, and group details before reserving.

Guidance, Equipment, and Water Comfort

The activity includes a bilingual guide, snorkeling equipment, and instructions before entering the water. Participants must follow the guide’s directions, remain within the designated group area, and respect all National Marine Park rules.

Shared Snorkeling Schedule

The standard shared tour is available in morning and afternoon departures, subject to availability, weather, marine conditions, park access, and operating requirements.

Morning Option

  • 8:30 AM – Meeting.
  • 9:00 AM – Boat departure.
  • 9:30 AM – First snorkeling site or period.
  • 10:30 AM – Second snorkeling site or period.
  • 11:30 AM – Return.

Afternoon Option

  • 12:30 PM – Meeting.
  • 1:00 PM – Boat departure.
  • 1:30 PM – First snorkeling site or period.
  • 2:30 PM – Second snorkeling site or period.
  • 3:30 PM – Return.

Times are operational estimates and may change because of conditions, participant preparation, site assignment, pier access, park instructions, or daily logistics.

What to Bring

Bring biodegradable sunscreen, a towel, sunglasses, and a hat. If you are prone to seasickness, take your preferred medication before departure and follow its instructions.

Before confirmation, provide the ages of children, swimming comfort, any mobility or assistance considerations, and any information relevant to safe participation.

Hotel Pickup and Transportation

Marine pickup may be possible from hotels, residences, marinas, or piers with authorized dock access that can safely accommodate the vessel. Boarding directly from the beach is not available.

Docking fees, when applicable, are not included. If the property does not have a suitable dock, private ground transportation to the assigned marina can be coordinated. Final logistics and additional costs depend on location, access, group size, schedule, luggage, and operating conditions.

  • Is the visibility always good?
    • Visibility is often favorable in the shallow reef area, but it changes naturally with wind, waves, rain, current, sunlight, and other marine conditions.
  • Are sea turtles or other animals guaranteed?
    • No. Marine life is wild. Species, numbers of animals, visibility, and individual encounters cannot be guaranteed.
  • What is the difference between snorkeling and Try Scuba?
    • Snorkeling remains at the surface and uses no tank. Try Scuba includes a briefing, shallow-water training, scuba equipment, direct supervision, and two guided underwater dives.
  • What is the difference between snorkeling and Reef Diving?
    • Snorkeling is experienced from the surface and requires no certification. Reef Diving is for certified divers and includes two guided scuba dives below the surface.
  • Can hotel pickup be arranged?
    • Marine pickup may be possible from authorized docks that safely accommodate the vessel. Boarding directly from the beach is not available. If the property does not have suitable dock access, private ground transportation to the assigned marina can be coordinated.
  • Do you rent underwater cameras?
    • Yes. GoPro cameras are available for rent for MXN $800. Photos and videos are delivered digitally after the tour.
